Know where you come from..and RIP Larry Scott

“You can’t know where you’re going unless you know where you’ve been.” Will Smith in Hitch

Unfortunately, this is too often the case when it comes to Physical Culture in Merica’ these days.

Everyone has or is THE Thing of the Minute.

The new and improved version.

It’s ground breaking, different, more efficient.

And usually, it’s more of the same and none of the above.

P90X?

They used to call that body-weight circuit training.

Muscle Confusion?

Wasn’t that Weider Principle #102, variety.

CrossFit?

Again, circuit training, only this time we’re using more complex modalities and lots of barbells.

Shaun T?

That Mary Franklin not only got himself some Hip Hop abs,

but he flipped the science of interval training upside down, go to 2:20 in the vid.

Richard Simmons was sweatin’ to the Oldies and selling videos about 20 years ago…

Kettlebells?

TRX?

Gymnastics rings any one?

5/3/1?

It’s kinda like Dorian Yates Heavy Duty System.

See, nothing new is new, it’s ALL been done before.

YOU, just didn’t know it.

Problem is, most folks have the curiosity level of a brain-dead zombie these days so instead of asking questions, reading and learning.

They go all Jonestown and drink the Guru’s KoolAid.

This has resulted in BIG BUCKS if you or you’re THING is the IT of the minute and the product is that the physical culture of the past is being pushed aside and forgotten.

More people today know Arhhhnold Schwarzenegger  as a once A-list action movie star rather than as the greatest bodybuilder EVER:

Far more people know the name Rich Froning than “Eugene Sandow” or “Louis Cyr”.

Ed Coan?

Bill Kazmier?

Magnus Ver Magnussen?

……ohhh, he’s that guy in all the Worlds Strongest Man re-runs, right?

And one of the greatest strength sport athletes in the history of mankind.

Arthur Jones?

Weight machines don’t dominate the landscape for the last 30 years if not for him.

HIT?

This made puking your guts out, not only acceptable, but encouraged, Jedi.

Point is:

We’re slowly losing our past, the culture this whole “Lifting Weights” thing is built on.

Too many Guru’s and know nothings are passing off the things and people of today as the end-all be-all when most can’t hold a very dimly lit and small, really small candle to those of the past.

Are You Aesthetic?

The bodybuilders of today are literal Freak Beasts and people forget that there was a time when bodybuilders were more impressive than disgusting.

The wisdom of the Larry Scott:

Aspiring bodybuilders often asked Mr. Scott his secret to success. He shared it in an interview with the martial arts trainer Steve Cotter.

“I generally tell them to take lots of vitamin P,” he said. “They say, ‘What is that?’ And I say, ‘Patience.’ ”- , NY times.

Just so you know:

The ORIGINAL name of the preacher curl was the

Scott Curl

larry-scott-arms-plan.jpgBro’s around the world owe a debt of gratitude to the man …

If it wasn’t for him the they’d only have the bench press station to congregate around.
