Friday stuff, Corn Syrup…and the squat aint dead

High Fructose Corn Syrup is bad for you!

Raise your Hand if you agree:

Damn, thats a lot of people. Keep in mind SCIENCE says all carbohydrates are, at a base level, the same. Keep your hand up if you still think so.

Damn it, damn it, damn it…..why did science have to come along and do something like this?

White JS. Straight talk about high-fructose corn syrup: what it is and what it ain’t.   Am J Clin Nutr. 2008 Dec;88(6):1716S-1721S. (thanks, Lyle Mcdonald)

You’re all wrong……but thanks for believing media/ celebrity driven hype and conforming as they saw fit. I’m glad you thought critically about this and looked for empirical evidence and scientific proof before jumping aimlessly on the bandwagon.

Some more Broscience down the drain. So people stop asking;

Broscience : Anecdotal evidence presented as fact by unqualified, yet confident individuals in the body building community.
Rampant within lifting forums and message boards, the information is usually based on hearsay with little to no scientific evidence to support the claims made by the individual.
Examples can be limited to a single frame of mind: It worked for me, so it works the same way for everyone! (Urban Dictionary)

Popular this week: The death of the Squat http://www.functionalstrengthcoach3.com/squats.html

Before we get ahead of ourselves, lets think about this people.

Context……It’s all about CONTEXT…….and selling stuff… (you see thats, ummm , why it was….ummm the trailer and stuff …)

Mike Boyle trains LOTS of high-profile athletes, hell, the BU Ice Hockey Team alone is worth (26 players x $37, 910=) $985,660 just in scholarships this year, and lots of kids. His point is that it takes a lot of time to get people to squat correctly, hips back, arched, chest up etc. and that single leg versions can get the necessary ROM and be loaded sooner without the same risks and learning curve. If you only have 6 weeks to train your athletes, you better get some results ASAP and spending 4 weeks learning the motion just isn’t  going to cut it. This isn’t entirely about long-term development and it’s not lifetime fitness, it’s “I need to compete…..Next Month, get me ready!”. In this situation and with his clientel I think it may be a good way to go….I still don’t think I would necessarily do this long-term, but in a bind, the logic is sound.

Personally, I still say have them squat bilaterally. Squatting is technically difficult but it teaches proper body positions, hip drive, back-arch etc.  If you can squat you can do just about any other exercise in the gym correctly. But do not try to teach without a box. Take the bottom up approach (I stole this from Mel Siff)…teach them to get up correctly, then go down correctly, then put it together…

You may say, “But yeah, those articles are all from this powerlifting site and by this Wendler guy”.

I say…Yes, cause the people on that site…LIFT…a lot of F-ing weight (Wendler over 1000lbs) so they know how to train, get results and mostly not get injured. Plus the last guy, Dr. Yessis, he’s one of the worlds most respected biomechanists…but yeah, whatever, Jillian, trainer Bob, Jackie Warner or some other T.V. ass-hat might think something is bad and so we should trust them.

Who would you think knows a little bit more about training?….Trick question,  obviously, she writes broscience and….she’s on TV!!!!!

When it comes down to it the traditional back squat works, and (at least the National Strength and Conditioning Assocoation thinks) is safe, if done correctly..thats an undisputed fact. If you think squats are dangerous you probably can’t actually (in terms of physics and anatomy) explain why. Just because you don’t understand how to squat correctly doesn’t mean its dangerous, it means you don’t know/ understand what you are doing….I could write a lot about why squatting still lives, but Jason Ferruggia already did.
